A lot of people are afraid to go to the dentist, with some even putting off necessary treatment due to their fears. If you’re one of these people, sedation dentistry may be right for you.

While there are a few different types of sedation, at Suncoast Dental, we offer twilight sedation. Carry on reading to learn more about what this is and what you can expect during your appointment.

What is twilight sedation?

Unlike general anaesthesia, which renders you fully unconscious, ‘twilight sleep’ or ‘twilight sedation’ involves a professional administering you a mild sedative to put you in a restful state. You are still awake, but you’re less aware of your surroundings. Your mouth will also be numb, so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure.

During sedation, you will be able to respond to verbal commands and any physical stimuli. You will also be able to move your eyes, mouth and limbs as needed during treatment. You may feel lightheaded from the medication, but you should not feel nauseated or drowsy after treatment is over.

What to expect with twilight sedation

At Suncoast Dental, we use IV sedation, which means the sedative is administered intravenously usually via the arm. Your dentist may also give you some pain medication for added comfort.

If you have experienced side effects of sedatives before, it’s best to let the dentist know beforehand.

Recovery after twilight sedation

You may feel a bit sleepy for a few hours after the procedure, and some people also report feeling drowsy for up to 24 hours. We advise not driving yourself home after the procedure, so try and bring someone along with you to your appointment. If you do come alone, ask the office staff to book you a taxi.

If you’re in any discomfort from the procedure, you can take over-the-counter painkillers. Avoid heavy exercise and strenuous activity for 24 hours after your sedation, which includes running, cycling and lifting weights over 10 kilograms.

Your safety is our priority

Sedation dentistry is a safe way to effectively perform a range of dental work in a single appointment, meaning you don’t have to return for follow-ups. If you’re considering sedation for your upcoming dental appointment and want to know more about what to expect or if you have any further questions, please contact us at Suncoast Dental. We are always happy to answer any questions that you may have about our treatments.
